Arkham, the Legend-Haunted City
Welcome to Arkham, the legend-haunted city!
This is a horror themed campaign based in Arkham, Massachusetts of 1928. Players will investigate strange and weird phenomena, unearth blasphemous artifacts, and battle bizarre alien creatures. We will be using the d20 Call of Cthulhu rules, which players of D&D 3.5 or Pathfinder should find familar. Noteworthy differences are documented under d20 Call of Cthulhu.
While most roleplaying genres are very combat oriented, horror roleplaying places more emphasis on research and gathering clues. Combat is inevitable, but characters who have done their homework will find their chance of survival much improved. Characters who charge in guns-ablazin’ tend not to last very long.
To make matters worse, this is Lovecraftian roleplaying. Characters have a much higher probability of going insane, dying, or both, and not necessarily in the order you might expect. It is even more important to proceed with deliberate caution. You have been warned.
A good first step in developing a character concept is to think about your Background and Profession. A background is what you were raised to do, whereas a profession is what you do today. Maybe you are a retired cat burglar who is now living the life of a dilettante? Or perhaps you were a soldier in the Great War, who is now struggling as a door-to-door salesman?
